What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy can help children, teens, and young adults to overcome challenges and get the most out of life. Occupational therapists (OTs) work in a person-centred and family-centred manner, which means that what we work on depends on what is important to the individual and the family.

OTs can work with an individual to improve participation:

At school

  • Early intervention to prepare young children for school
  • Using the hands to complete tasks like handwriting, colouring, drawing, cutting, and gluing
  • Organisation
  • Playing and cooperating with peers
  • Coping with sensory issues (noise, visual overload, needing extra movement)
  • Behaviour support
  • Listening skills and joining in
  • Movement skills for outdoor play and sport.

At home

  • Self-care such as brushing teeth, bathing, washing hair, getting dressed, putting on shoes and socks, eating
  • Organisation and following routines
  • Playing and getting along with siblings
  • Coping with sensory issues
  • Behaviour support for parents/families

In the community

  • Joining in with activities in the community
  • Preparation for employment
  • Social skills
  • Coping with sensory issues
